Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport Reviews-Chiang Kai-shek
Chiang Kai-shek

When the original and only airport in Taipei City (Taipei Songshan Airport) had become overcrowded in the 1970s, a new airport was opened to alleviate congestion in 1979 alongside with its Terminal 1. Initially, it was planned to be called “Taoyuan International Airport” but this was later changed to Chiang Kai-shek International Airport, in memory of former President Chiang Kai-shek (CKS International Airport). Eventually in 2006, the name was changed to its current name.

The airport serving the Taipei area is the largest of Taiwan’s four international airports and is the largest airport among the two airports serving Taipei (the other being Taipei Songshan Airport). Now, let’s look at more about Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) in this review.

Airport Facilities

Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport Reviews-showersThe largest international airport in the Republic of China where most international flights depart and arrive everyday. Given that introduction, TPE has several facilities throughout its terminals. The second terminal which was opened in 2000 has 24 restrooms and free showers available. Information desks and tourists services counters are found in both terminals and English is spoken.

The five-story terminal 1 of the airport features 22 gates. A row of 11 gates is located on the north end of the airfield facing the north runway and another row of 11 gates is located on the south end airfield facing the south runway. Together, they form a giant “H”. In 2012, the renovation project of the terminal was completed, doubling the floor area, expanding check-in counters, increasing shopping areas, and expanding car-parking facilities. Part of the project was the complete redesigning of both the exterior and interior of the terminal.

shopTerminal 2 is also currently undergoing an expansion project that will increase the terminal’s annual passenger capacity by 5 million people.

Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport welcomes overnight guests since the TPE is open 24 hours. However, please be advised that restaurants close by midnight. As an alternative, there is a 24-hour 7-Eleven in Terminal 2’s food court.

Shops at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport include newsagents, duty-free outlets, and retailers selling local crafts and souvenirs. These can be found throughout the terminals, although there is a larger concentration in the departure areas. There are bank branches in both terminals. These outlets also offer ATMs and currency exchange services.

Travellers can stay connected because TPE has free WiFi available throughout the airport. Internet facilities are also available on Terminal 1’s 1st floor, north and south departure corridors. Though, for passengers at Terminal 2, WiFi is only available at Mila Coffee.

Shuttle buses and the driverless Skytrain shuttle provide regular free transportation between the terminals.

Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport Reviews-For driving directions from Taipei, take National Freeway 1 (Sun Yat-sen Freeway) southwest towards Taipei and Taichung/Chungli, before turning westbound onto National Freeway 2.

Through public transportation, regular shuttle buses link Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport with the nearby Taoyuan HSR station. Several bus companies route to Taipei City centre destinations. Taxis are also available 24 hours a day outside the arrivals area, but please be advised that this is the most expensive way of travelling to the city.

Even if the airport had ranked down to the 20th spot this year from being 17th last year on “The World’s Top 100 Airports,” this obviously didn’t affect the performance and quality of service TPE provides. The airport, which was initially established to help an airport serving Taipei, had actually been a performer for several years. Have you been to Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport?
