Cologne Bonn Airport Reviews
Cologne is the fourth largest city in Germany, where the former capital was Bonn. Now, in this review, let’s talk about the international airport located in the most densely populated and most powerful economic region of Continental Europe: Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN).
Initially, it was established for the German Luftwaffe (aerial warfare branch of the German Wehrmacht) during World War II and turned into an airport by the British military after the war and was opened for civilian air traffic. Let’s get to know more about the airport now.
Among Germany’s busiest airports, it is a hub for low-cost carriers. Cologne Bonn Airport has several facilities found throughout the airport. Here, let us mention some of the establishments, which are:
Restrooms are located in Terminal 2 but unfortunately, shower rooms are not available. However, help desks are available and found at the departures area of Terminal 1 and at concourse D of Terminal 2.
There are duty-free shops (for non-EU passengers) in both terminals, as well as various specialist retailers. Among the options are fashion boutiques, supermarkets, and a children’s toy shop. A good selection of restaurants, bars, fast-food outlets, snack bars, and cafés are located in both terminals – the majority of options are available in the departures areas. A few snack bars in Terminal 2 are open 24 hours a day.
To keep travellers connected, WiFi is available throughout the airport. There are banks in the departure areas of both terminals. ATMs and bureaux de change services can be found at various points throughout the airport.

Getting To and From
Since Cologne Bonn Airport is a large transport facility, it has express city trains such as City Night Line, ICE and Thalys.
The best way going to Cologne Bonn Airport is with Central train station, since the train station is located just next to the city’s famous icon, the Cologne Cathedral. It takes approximately 20 minutes to reach the airport. The same goes with buses.
Access to public transportation makes it very convenient for long-distance coaches as well as for passengers and people accompanying them to reach the airport. You can get to the center of Cologne within 15 minutes by car or by local public transport.
Transport connections from the airport include rail, bus, long-distance coach, taxi, and car rentals.
Location – Traffic – Service
Cologne Bonn Airport is located 15km (9 miles) southeast of Cologne and serves as the hub for Eurowings, FedEx Express, Germanwings and UPS Airlines. CGN has 3 runways and 2 runways located directly beside each other. Cologne Bonn offers domestic and international routes and cargo services. Being the seventh largest passenger airport in Germany, it had accommodated 10,338,375 passengers last year which made a 9.4% increase in passenger movement compared to last year’s with only 9,450,493. This shows that Cologne Bonn Airport’s passengers increase annually. They even received the award in June 2015 for ACI EUROPE Best Airport Award.
Cologne Bonn Airport Reviews and News
Judging through the most recent Cologne Bonn Airport Reviews, the airport had garnered 6/10 from Skytrax but some travellers are not satisfied with their overall experience with the airport. The airport is too crowded and unorganized as one reviewer said. Some travellers are even complaining about the shortage of plugs at the departure area. This has been a concern because most of the flyers can’t charge their laptops. The most scored topic that never failed to be mentioned, is the limited and expensive food and beverages sold at the airport.
The latest news about CGN happened 3 days ago when a 62-year-old Spanish man was arrested at the CGN for security breach. Well, he was captured because he reportedly wanted to take the quickest route to the Faro-bound plane he was due to board. He actually passed through a passcode-protected door next to a supermarket.

After reading several Cologne Bonn Airport reviews and seeing all the complaints and the breaches of security news, I think CGN should take actions to accommodate their travellers’ concerns to maintain the security of the airport; they must be more organized. Though, on a positive note, we mustn’t forget that Cologne Bonn Airport is at the 19th rank this year on the World’s Top 100 Airports by Skytrax.
